Why is Taking a Personality Test in Context Important?
Austrian-American psychologist Walter Mischel's Theory of Personality states that an individual's behavior is influenced by two things- the specific attributes of a given situation and the manner in which he perceives the situation.
Mischel showed that study after study failed to support the fundamental traditional assumption of personality theory, that an individual’s behavior with regard to a trait (e.g. conscientiousness, sociability) is highly consistent across diverse situations. Instead, Mischel's analyses revealed that an individual’s behavior, when closely examined, was highly dependent upon context or situational cues, rather than expressed consistently across diverse situations that differed in meaning. Mischel maintained that behavior is shaped largely by the exigencies of a given situation, in other words - context.
Walter Mischel's Theory of Personality states that an individual's behavior is influenced by the specific attributes of a given situation and the manner in which he perceives the situation. He emphasized that we have individual differences, so our values and expectancies must be consider in predicting a person's behavior and personality. According to Mischel, there are five person variables that contribute to the conditions of a specific situation. They are used in predicting how a person will most likely behave.

Competencies - our intellectual capabilities as well as social skills. This includes a person's level of emotional intelligence.

Cognitive Strategies - the different perceptions of a specific event. (For instance, what may be "threatening" for you may be "challenging" to another person depending on your color personality tendencies.)

Expectancies - the expected results of different behaviors that are realized by the person inside their mind. (Positive expectations versus Negative expectations, Optimism versus Pessimism, etc.)

Subjective Values - the respective value of each possible outcomes of various behaviors.

Self-regulatory systems - the groups of rules and standards that people adapt to in order to regulate their behavior. This includes a person's level of emotional intelligence.
Billings' ultimate goal in creating the relationship personality test, Primary Colors Personality, was to create a jargon free, universal, easy to understand and implement, contextual personality insight tool that would allow people to gain insight into automatically relied upon personality tendencies they might revert to in different life and emotional contexts.
Taking into consideration the fact that human beings do not usually experience conflict, frustration, strife and stress when they are happy and things are going the way the want in their lives, Billings decided to focus on helping people understand what choices and behaviors they have a tendency to rely on when things were not going the way they wanted. PRIMARY: Centered PURPLE – People with strong purple personality tendencies are driven to manage, govern and get things done. They are motivated to find the most efficient way to accomplish their goals and help other to accomplish theirs. They are very task-oriented, and tend to define themselves by their ability to get things done. They prefer to have their information in bullet points, and prefer clear and practical information. They enjoy educating and providing the information and direction necessary to accomplish a particular goal. They love checklists and a way to keep track of their progress. They are very good with managing contacts, organization and follow through.
SECONDARY: Centered GREEN – People with strong green personality tendencies are big picture thinkers. They are purpose driven and need to believe in something larger than themselves. People with strong green personality tendencies want to find answers to the world’s problems. They are difference-makers who see change as very positive and progressive and this drives and motivates them. They value FAIRNESS and become frustrated by those they feel are motivated by greed and self-consumption.
