Why is Taking a Personality Test in Context Important?
Dawn Billings was inspired by the work of Walter Mischel in the field of contextual personality assessment. In 1968, Walter Mischel, an American psychologist specializing in personality theory and social psychology, published the now classic monograph, Personality and Assessment, which created somewhat of a crisis in psychology that changed the agenda of the field of type and trait psychology significantly. Mischel showed that study after study failed to support the fundamental traditional assumption of personality theory, that an individual’s behavior with regard to a trait (e.g. conscientiousness, sociability) is highly consistent across diverse situations. Instead, Mischel's analyses revealed that an individual’s behavior, when closely examined, was highly dependent upon context or situational cues, rather than expressed consistently across diverse situations that differed in meaning. Mischel maintained that behavior is shaped largely by the exigencies of a given situation, in other words - context.
Billings' ultimate goal in creating the Primary Colors Personality Test was to create a jargon free, universal, easy to understand and implement, contextual personality insight tool that would allow people to gain insight into automatically relied upon personality tendencies they might revert to in different life and emotional contexts.
Taking into consideration the fact that human being do not usually experience conflict, frustration, strife and stress when they are happy and things are going the way the want in their lives, Billings decided to focus on helping people understand what choices and behaviors they had a tendency to use when things were not going the way they wanted. In other words, what personality color tendencies did they revert to when they were stressed, angry and frustrated? Once you understand that relationship struggles are not born out of our centered personality colors strengths, but that they arise when things become difficult, challenging and confusing, you can spend time and energy gaining understanding of what color personality tendencies, centered or extreme do you rely on in life's most stressful situations.

Primary Colors Personality Test and personality insight tools depart from the limited, traditional four-quadrant personality types made popular by Carl Jung and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator by not only examining what strengths and talents are uniquely suited to building your life in powerfully positive ways, and what destructive extreme personality tendencies limit, inhibit and destroy your greatest dreams of happiness and success, but this expert series of tests also helps you discover what drives your core set of values; strength or warmth? (See example of Strength vs. Warmth test to right)
Human beings make judgements about what is right and what they believe to be wrong based upon a core set of values they have chosen to adopt. Conflict, frustration and miscommunication most often occur when people find themselves on different sides of the Primary Colors Values Wheel.
By understanding what primarily drives the values that determine your perspectives, views and opinions versus what values primarily drive others perspectives, views and opinions, you are better equipped to effectively resolve conflict, understand, and positively communicate with those with whom you find yourself most often in conflict.
Centered personality tendencies are where your strengths, success, jOY and talents reside, while all imbalance, frustration, anger, misery and anxiety are born out of your extreme personality tendencies.
Although understanding your strengths and talents is imperative to fully understanding YOU, it is not nearly as critical to understand your strengths and talents, as it is to understand what extreme personality tendencies may be dramatically and negatively tearing down everything that you profess to hold dear.
Examine carefully the extreme and destructive tendencies of each of the personality colors below and consider what blend of extreme personality tendencies may hold you hostage from real joy and success you crave.
